HARWICH Boxing Club put on a 14-bout show at Colchester’s Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Youth boxer Alfie Lucas gave a stand-out performance against Ned Stevenson, from Trumpington ABC.

It was always going to be a real test of character for the classy bantamweight, having lost to his opponent last season and suffered a heavy defeat the previous week, in the Youth Championships.

The first round was a tight affair, with little separating the two.

Lucas then upped the pace and took control of the bout, forcing Stevenson back.

Lucas forced an eight count in the final round, as his superior punch-rate told.

Stevenson received a warning for holding and his fate was sealed.

An outstanding unanimous points win went the way of the Harwich boxer, who also picked up the best home boxer of the night award.

Another boxer looking to exorcise his demons was 15-year-old Frazer Mann, who had suffered a second-round technical knockout defeat to Ty Davies in October.

In this lively rematch, Mann grew in confidence as the bout progressed against the England international from Sandy ABC.

A particularly dominant final round saw Mann force a standing eight count and confirm a solid unanimous points win and deserved revenge to boot.

The pick of the junior boxers was 14-year-old Stevie Martin, who faced Slough’s Kailib Appleton.

Martin pressured well in rounds two and three, with attacks to head and body.

Although Appleton scored concisely out of low-guard position, it was not enough to deny the home boxer a popular unanimous points win.

Heavy-handed Rio Gordon took on the challenge of the physically bigger Daniel Adger, from Chadwell St Mary ABC.

The 15-year-old always finished the rounds the stronger to ensure he got a unanimous points win to take his overall record to six wins from seven.

Light heavyweight Pat Allen Cripps boxed out of his weight class against 2 Para soldier Lee Holmes.

He employed just the right tactics to stay out of trouble.

Fast hands and neat footwork bamboozled Holmes at times and Allen-Cripps opened up in the last, as his powerful right hook found the mark on several occasions to take a clear unanimous points win.

Thirteen-year-old Jack Farrow got back to winning ways in a close contest with March ABC’s Robert Tanner.

Little separated the two after a hard-fought contest, with two of the three judges awarding Farrow the decision on points.

Harwich senior lightweight Jimmy Preston and welterweight Paul Gordon faced opposition from 2 Para in the shape of Zak Andrews and Joe Bazeley respectively.

The slightly clearer punching of Andrews saw him home on a split points decision, while Bazeley’s consistent come-forward style saw him home via a unanimous points decision.

After winning the first round of an Essex youth light welterweight final, Kasey Bradnum snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and succumbed to the desire of Brentwood’s Billy Chandler. He ultimately lost out on points.

Opening the evening were Cameron Walker, ten, and Jacob Kelly, 14, who took part in non-decision skills contests against foes from Billericay and Slough respectively.

Both gave a good accounts of themselves.
