HARWICH Boxing Club members travelled more than 400 miles, with six boxers appearing on three separate shows.

The most significant show was the national junior ABA quarter-finals in Leysdown, Kent.

Frazer Mann (pictured) was looking to book his place in the last four of the under-60k category.

The 15-year-old faced the challenge of Martin McDonagh, from Southampton.

Mann took the initiative and applied pressure throughout the first round, with chopping round hooks on the inside scoring well.

Mann kept a high tempo in rounds two and three and, with a warning against McDonagh in the last for holding, the Harwich boxer’s victory was sealed with a unanimous points win.

He now moves on to Portsmouth in a couple of weeks to continue his quest for national honours.

The second Harwich boxer in action in Kent was 14-year-old Stevie Martin, who faced Tyler Halliwell, from Portsmouth, at the under-48k category, and lost a points decision.

On a supporting bout, 16-year-old bantamweight Alfie Lucas produced arguably the best ring performance of the weekend for the club against Archie Bye, from Kemsing ABC, in Kent.

The contest was taken with just four days’ notice.

However, Lucas did not let that affect his performance as quality solid hooks and uppercuts forced a standing eight count in the opening round.

Lucas’ accurate shots saw him home on a unanimous points decision.

Two boxers took part in a show at Debenham, Suffolk, with 14-year-old Jacob Kelly in search of his first win at the second time of asking.

A fired-up Kelly shot out of the blocks and felled opponent Mohammad Anwar, from Slough, in the opening minute for a count of eight.

Kelly kept the pressure up and ferocious right hands sent Anwar to the ropes, convincing the referee to halt proceedings.

On the same show, 13-year-old Jack Farrow dipped out on a close points decision against Joe Marsh, from Sudbury ABC.

Sixteen-year-old Sean Darvell was selected for an Essex ABA team in a representative match at Purfleet.

The southpaw battled hard all the way against Imran Aref, from Peterborough Police ABC, before dropping a tight split points decision.
