LITTLE Oakley’s A team have clocked up their sixth win in a row.

The young Acorns won 2-1 at Tiptree Jobserve Reserves, in Essex and Suffolk Border League division two on Saturday.

Goals from Matthew Smith and Brandon Rusby allowed a threadbare team to defeat their second-placed hosts, who themselves had won 16 of their last 19 games.

The first half saw Oakley dominate but they could only score once through the in-form Smith, ably set up by newly-converted Oakley striker Franky Selwyn.

Tiptree did reply, from a free kick, while the Acorns managed to hit the woodwork in a first half that finished 1-1.

The second half began with the visitors in the ascendency.

They hit the woodwork again, through Smith, and had two balls cleared off the line – one from Selwyn and one from Harry Bradley.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 70th minute, when Selwyn set up Rusby for the winning goal.

Rusby, ironically, had only just managed to stay on the pitch after a reckless challenge from a Tiptree forward, but the young midfielder headed well to earn all the points and himself the man-of-the-match honours.

This is Oakley’s sixth win a row and they have won seven of their last eight fixtures, which now puts them up to fifth in the table with games in hand on the teams around them.

Elsewhere, Oakley's first team won 2-1 at Tollesbury on Saturday, in the Border League premier division.

Sam Eldridge and Lewis Wood were on target for the Acorns, who now switch their attention to tomorrow’s home match against Barnston AFC.

After this weekend, Paul Sadler and Sean Tynan’s side have seven matches left – with five of them taking place at the Memorial Ground.

Harwich and Parkeston were without a game last weekend and only have two fixtures left.

The first of those is tomorrow, against Alresford Colne Rangers at the Royal Oak.

The Shrimpers, jointly-managed by Martin Warnes and John Fidgett, then finish with a match at Hatfield Peverel next Saturday. Harwich are ninth in the premier division.
