DETERMINED duos competed in the Harwich Men’s League pairs competition, at Parkeston Railway Club and Little Oakley Club.

At the railway club, the two pairs that won through to finals night at the Park Pavilion on May 13 were father-and-son Marcus and Damien Smith, from Little Oakley A, and father-and-son Darin and Matt Good, from Hanover A.

The Smiths beat club colleagues Stuart Kerridge and Steve Barker 3-1 and Hanover’s Mick Chambers and Paul Good 3-0.

In their final game, they then beat George Lord and Tony Berritt (Maybush) 3-2.

At one time, the Maybush pair led 2-0.

The Goods beat Squirrels pair Steve Mixter and Tony Jewell 3-0, John Duly and Lee Houstan, from the Flag, 3-2, and Martin Heath and Kevin Lovett, from the Cricket Club, 3-1.

In their final game, Darin and Matt beat Trafalgar’s Shaun Fox and Alan Scurrell 3-0, with a 14-dart leg.

Heath scored two 180s and Andy Bacon, from the Little Oakley Club, had one 180.

At Oakley, the holders of the pairs trophy, Alan Mathieson and partner Kevin Cook, from Hanover A, have won through, while the other pair to go through to finals night are Paul Amoss and Andy Barton, from Ind Coope A.

On the way, Amoss and Barton beat Simon Benham and Lee Knight (Shakers) 3-2 and then Hanover’s Peter Cheesman and John Bennett 3-1.

In the final they beat father-and-son Phil and Tom Armstrong 3-1.

Holders Mathieson and Cook played four games and, on the way, they beat Jamie Doogan and Jack Newell (Ships) 3-0, Rangers’ Terry Mcburney and John Tyrrell 3-0 and Bob Race and Gavin Johnson, from Ind Coope.

Then, in the final game, they won 3-2 – after one time being 2-0 down to Alan Collins and Kevin Edwards, from Ind Coope.

Collins and Edwards were comfortable, being 2-0 up, but Mathieson had a 126 finish and Cook a 70 finish to make it all-square at 2-2.

In the final leg, missed doubles by the Coope pair proved costly as Kevin Cook got the important winning double three.

On the night, Collins and Cheesman both scored 180s.

The Ships’ Nick Lawrie had 157 and 130 finishes, while Kris Muir had a 113 shot-out. Tonight, the final of the Division B Knock Out Cup final, between Ships and Rangers, is taking place at the United Services Club.

Play gets under way at 8.30pm.

The following week is the captain/secretary section, to be held at the Ships.
