MANNINGTREE High School student Alexander Brincklow competed in the Valerie Degorce International Youth Trophy.

He took part in the under-14 foil category, at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre in Hendon.

Brincklow won all five of his poule fights to be seeded second into the direct eliminations (DEs), receiving a bye for the first round of DEs.

In the last 16, his opponent was the 18th seed.

Taking an early lead, Brincklow was six points ahead by the first break.

In the second segment, his opponent fought back, gaining some hits.

Colchester and District Fencing Club member Brincklow was never in any danger of losing the fight, though, clearly showing he was the stronger fencer.

He finished with a nicely-executed parry risposte to win the bout 15/6.

In the last eight against the seventh seed, Brincklow had to work much harder.

The scores were level for the majority of the match but, with a medal in sight, he pulled ahead in the last third of the fight.

He kept his focus, despite his opponent's increasingly desperate attacks to score.

Brincklow concluded the the bout with a 15/11 victory.

In the semi-final, the Great Bromley fencer met the Scottish third seed and he was caught out by the speed of his opponent's attacks.

The bout was halted at one point as Brincklow's blade was dramatically broken in two and by the time he had figured out his game it was too late, losing 15-4.

Brincklow took home the bronze medal this time.
