MISTLEY Cricket Club were denied the chance to finish with five straight wins after the rain halted their match at Halstead.

The hosts finished on 187 for eight in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one contest on Saturday afternoon.

Timothy Scott took three wickets for Mistley and there were two apiece for Jack Fifield and Bruce Leeke.

The Swans were then ten for no loss off two overs when wet weather forced an early end at Star Stile.

At least they finished unbeaten in their last five matches, having won the previous four.

Mistley and Halstead’s second teams also met on Saturday, in a third division contest at New Road.

Halstead batted first and were all out for 114, with Oliver Fifield, Dylan Day and Owen Clover each taking two wickets.

Miles Churchill top-scored for the Swans with 91 not out, supported by Robin Mills, who finished on 19 not out, as Mistley successfully chased the required runs to win by eight wickets.

On Sunday, Mistley won the toss and chose to bat first in their North Essex League match at home to Wivenhoe.

The first three scoring shots from Day were sixes and these were followed up with a four.

James Stamatis started slower, but caught up as they both reached 50 about the same time.

With dark clouds building to the north, the partnership had reached 149 at the 20-over drinks break when heavy rain started.

Within half an hour, the square and some of the outfield was under water.

Although this drained away quickly, the damage had been done with the ground much too wet for play to continue.

What was looking like being a high-scoring and competitive match therefore had to be abandoned, bringing an abrupt end to the season.
