HARWICH and Dovercourt Golf Club's ladies finally got their season underway when they hosted their Spring Meeting.

This was much to the relief of lady captain Ruth Stapleton as several competitions had been postponed because of the weather earlier in the year, including the Easter Greensomes.

The sun shone as the ladies gathered on the first tee, welcomed by club captain Keith Morris.

A Texas scramble was the format for the day, played in teams of threes, randomly drawn with a low, medium and high-handicap player in each.

Sue Keen, Anne Myers and Mandy Champ took the honours with Kate Fender, Glynis Hutchence and Carol Wrayton second.

Phyllis Boddy claimed nearest the pin honours.

Wrayton had the straightest drive.

Meanwhile, the ladies were the victors in the annual ladies versus veterans mixed team fun event.

Fender and Georgie Grout were the club winners of the national Coronation Foursomes competition.

They will go on to represent the club in the area finals.

They also progressed to the third round of the national Daily Mail Foursomes, losing 2&1 away to a very strong pair of low-handicap ladies from Purdis Heath.

The winter stableford competition was won by Fender.

Linda Burrows was runner-up.

Medal winners: 2 Ruth Stapleton, 4 Kate Fender, 5 and 6 Glynis Hutchence.

The first friendly of the year against visitors Frinton was won by Harwich.

Men's results: Jubilee Cup: Harwich and Dovercourt 3½ Thorpe Hall 5½.

LF Wood: Harwich and Dovercourt 9½ Ballards Gore 3½.

Vets' match: Purdis Heath 5½ Harwich and Dovercourt 2½.
