England veteran Terry heading to South Africa

HOCKEY veteran Terry Howlett is hungry for more medal glory at this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

The Dovercourt ace has been picked for England’s over-65s, to compete in Cape Town between September 15 and 24.

It will be his third taste of the global competition, having previously won gold and silver medals in 2006 and 2008.

And faced with the prospect of making it a coveted hat-trick, Howlett told the Standard: “It would be lovely to add another gold to my collection.

“Hopefully we can do well.

“I’ve previously played for the over-60s but now I’m in the over-65s.

“A few of us have graduated through the age ranks together and I know them well.

“There’s one or two others in the ranks, too, and a lot of talent. Hopefully we can go all the way.”

Howlett and his team-mates picked up a silver medal in Germany in 2006 and then beat Australia in the 2008 final in Hong Kong.

On both occasions, he was competing for the over-60s.

“Hong Kong was the best experience,” said the Colchester Hockey Club stalwart.

“I was ‘over-age’, having been picked for the over-60s when I was actually 65.

“I was punching above my weight but helping the team go on and win gold – having missed out two years previously – was probably the highlight of my hockey career.”
