A CONTROVERSIAL vaccine is to be given to children in the Manningtree area in a groundbreaking mobile service.

The MMR jab was at the centre of debate in 1998 when it was linked to causing autism by the research of Dr Andrew Wakefield.

Although the link was later disproved, take-up is still low in certain north east Essex communities and a new bus service will be going into Lawford and Manningtree in the coming weeks, in a bid to reverse the trend.

The scheme was given the go-ahead by members of the East Essex Area Forum on Tuesday who had carried out an enquiry.

It found that just 79 per cent of children in Tendring receive the jab and 74 per cent of children in Colchester – short of the national average of 84 per cent and the Government target of 90 per cent.
