The History

The original Clock House was the principal building and home for the owners of Clock House Farm. It was a fine and desirable 6 bedroomed residence complete with oak panelled library. At the time of WW1 it was the home of Phillip S Preeston deputy coroner for the Eastern Division of Essex. We have extensive historical documents in our possession. Sadly Preeston and his brother both died as a result of injuries received during the war. The land and building with Preeston as a sitting tenant was auctioned off in 1914. Subsequently land was sold off to the Crittall family for construction of the famous Crittall homes (now listed). Additionally all the homes and school down Chapel Hill were built upon the Clock House land. At the rear of the property ran Cressing Way.

Now renamed Clockhouse way all the homes on that street were built upon Clock House land.

Sadly around 1935 a fire engulfed The Clock House. The existing Clock House was then built with some salvaged parts of the original house. It was designed and built during the late 1930's and completed around 1939/1940. The buyer was Mrs Robertson and her husband proprietors of the Navy and Army stores 106 HIgh Street Braintree. The Robertsons commenced developing land that surrounded the new Clock House. In 1946 the Clock House was purchased by Dr.Harold Cordingley who had been appointed headmaster at Braintree High School a position he occupied until his retirement. The Cordingley family lived at the house until his death in 1994.

At this time further land surrounding the was redeveloped to it's present state.

I purchased the property in 2011 and set about restoring the house to it's former state.

Why we love it here.

The restoration and modernising of the property has been a labour of love. It is surprisingly secluded but occupies a prominent position and is really significant in terms of historical detail. It was great for when we worked from home and has easy access to the main A120. It is situated in easy walking distance of the High Street and Braintree village. It afforded easy access to the railway station for when we commuted to London. The family love it here ,a sun trap in summer and cosy in winter. High ceilings and oak panelling add to the effect.

The neighbours are very friendly and helpful.
