STREETS across Harwich and Manningtree are set to be plunged into darkness next weekend as Essex County Council revealed their part night lighting plans.
Most of the lights in the area will be turned off between midnight and 5am from Sunday January 26.
The switch off had been originally scheduled for New Years Day but the council needed more time to draw up their plans.
Harwich councillor Ivan Henderson has attacked the proposals and believes County Hall has not completed a full enough consultation.
Mr Henderson, deputy Labour leader on the county council said: “I think it has taken the easiest and the cheapest option which is going to rocket people’s fear of crime.
“We have a very elderly population in Tendring and the people worrying about crime could have a huge impact on their health with people knowing there are no street lights."
