A TRIO of traffic calming measures could be introduced in order to save the lives of village swans.
Mistley Parish Council is set to lobby the Highways Agency to introduce improve signage to warn drivers about the birds, vehicle activated signs which illuminate when cars approach too quickly and rumble strips along The Walls to try and prevent more fatalities.
So far this year seven swans have been killed on the road, compared to 34 in total during 2013.
Ian Tucker believes that commuters going to Ipswich or rushing to catch trains use the road to catch up speed during rush hour and something needs to be done.
“We need to slow the traffic down or make people aware of the potential danger to the swans,” he said.
“There are currently two wildlife signs on the road but they are very dirty and could be changed specifically to refer to swans.
“Having done some research I believe we could get two vehicle activated signs for between £6,000 and £8,000.”
