CLOSING Harwich maternity unit could lead to more babies being born on the way to hospital, it is feared.
Sue Halsey’s brother Raymond was born at the roadside while on route to Colchester Maternity Home, in Lexden Road, from Harwich in June 1957.
At the time Harwich did not have a maternity unit.
She fears we could see many repeats of that terrifying evening.
“It is indeed a daunting thought for future mothers to be faced with no local facilities and having to try and get to a hospital 16 to18 miles away," she said.
