CONTRACTORS have been criticised for digging a large hole yards away from a war memorial the day before Remembrance Sunday.
Morrisons Utility Services dug a trench on behalf of BT Openreach last Saturday, close to the memorial in Little Oakley on the greensward of Lodge Road.
Little Oakley Parish Council chairman Tom Howard described the timing of the maintenance work as “thoughtless”, especially as the contractors seemingly took no further action until after Remembrance Sunday.
“Two men turned up and dug a hole near Little Oakley’s war memorial on Saturday morning and then went away again shortly afterwards,” he said.
“If they were not going to do any work until the following week, then it is at best thoughtless and at worst disrespectful to dig this hole and surround it with bright blue barriers just yards from the war memorial."
A spokesman for BT said they were sorry and would investigate.
