THE first spade has been put in the ground on the biggest development in Lawford for two decades.
Rose Builders has begun work on Summers Park on land off Cox’s Hill.
In November last year Tendring Council gave the plans for 150 homes the green light.
Councillors Carlo Guglielmi and Alan Coley were invited to the site on Wednesday.
Tendring Council is also considering other plans for a multi-use games area, a bus park and sports field extension for Manningtree High School at the site.
Steven Rose, of Rose Builders, said there has been a lot of interest so far.
He said: “Alan and Carlo cut the first turf and works commenced on Wednesday. The first houses will be available for occupation from early next year.
“We have had a huge amount of interest, particularly from local people regarding housing of all shapes and sizes.”
