A GROUP has stepped forward to make sure a Pride event continues after its committee stepped down.

Earlier this month the Colchester Has Pride committee announced it was resigning en masse after receiving unpleasant comments and feeling there was a general lack of support.

However, the committee said it does not mean there will not be a Pride event next year.

Until a new committee and team are voted in, a group including some involved in this year’s event, have stepped forward to ensure the successful event continues.

A public meeting has been arranged for October 9 at 7pm at Colchester Town Hall.

The meeting will be chaired independently by leader of the council Mark Cory (Lib Dem), who is keen for the town to support equality events.

It will be a chance for people interested to share their thoughts and ideas.

The new committee members will need to be resourceful and innovative and are immediately tasked with raising funds.

A first fundraiser event for Pride is in the early stages of planning and details are to be announced.

It is also hoped businesses will engage with event organisers to create a visible LGBT+ Pride presence throughout the town.
