CHILDREN measured their green-fingered gardening skills in a school's floral tradition.

Lawford Primary School held it's annual Sunflower Morning on Saturday September 15.

Each year before they start school, each child in the new year of children receives a sunflower seedling to grow over the summer - though every pupil can participate.

A spokesman for the school said: "This event has been a part of the community for decades with the parents able to recall when they grew their flowers.

"This year, with the sun shining brightly, the school’s PTA organised the annual competition and had a few additional games to play, as well as a wonderful array of cakes.

"The children arrived proudly bearing their sunflowers and they were lined up outside ready to be measured by Rev Simon Heron."

"It was the first time the new Headteacher Miss Abbie Fairbairn had taken part in this event and she was delighted by the numbers that came and the enthusiasm of the children and parents."

Children in Key Stage One had created some wonderful sunflower artwork to celebrate the event.

There were prizes including the tallest sunflower, the shortest sunflower, the widest head and smallest head.
