SCHOOL children helped a speed watch group clampdown on dangerous drivers in their town.

The Essex Safer Roads Partnership held a Surround A Town day in Harwich on Wednesday.

It worked alongside Harwich Community Speed Watch group and the operation saw pupils from St Joseph's Primary School involved with talking to motorists about road safety and the impact of dangerous driving.

A number of fixed penalty notices were issued on the day, including 90 for failing to wear a seatbelt and ten for using a mobile phone whilst driving.

A total of 74 drivers will be receiving a fine through the post having been caught speeding and a further 19 were issued tickets at the roadside having been stopped for speeding.

Four vehicles were seized for having no insurance and one driver was arrested for drink driving.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "During the operation seven drivers were stopped and spoken to by pupils from the school as an alternative method of educating motorists on the dangers of poor driving.

"The Harwich Community Speed Watch group also identified 101 speeding motorists during their checks, each of whom will receive a letter from Essex Police."
