EXHAUSTED residents are pleading for action to stop a supermarket alarm ringing throughout the night.

After chain Aldi opened a new store in Kirby Road, Walton, excited shoppers flocked through the doors to show their support.

Opened by Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo, staff at the new store rewarded their first customers by handing out complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Store manager Craig Thorn-Anderson said the new 1,254sq metre store has created 30 jobs in the area.

But not everyone is happy about the new addition to the town.

Some residents living in close proximity to the store have been suffering sleepless nights thanks to the store alarm ringing throughout the night.

Toni Harding said the irritating sound kept her children and husband awake, with the alarm often sounding for up to an hour on end.

"I was happy about the new store and love shopping there," she said. "But it's making me so miserable.

"The new store that was meant to help Walton community is destroying my family home.

"Since opening I have been non-stop woken up through the night by the alarm."

Despite making recordings of the incidents and writing down the dates and times, Toni was left frustrated in her attempts to solve the problem.

"Last night I was woken up at 11pm and the alarm went off for an hour," she said. "It wakes my children up and my husband, who has to be up at 4am.

"I've called head office, I have been over to the store and it still happens.

"It's making my life a nightmare, what once was a peaceful town listening to church bells has now been replaced by Aldi alarm bells all night."

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We’re looking to resolve the issue with the alarm at our new Walton as soon as possible, and apologise to any residents who have been affected.”
