DOZENS of youngsters lined up on Harwich’s pier to greet St Nicholas as he arrived in the town.

Harwich RNLI lifeboat crew brought St Nicholas ashore to greet crowds who braved the rain to meet him and the volunteers.

Upon his arrival Tendring Brass Band played Christmas songs for onlookers.

St Nicholas was welcomed by Harwich mayor Charlie Powell.

He said: “It was fantastic to see St Nicholas arriving by boat.

“There was a great atmosphere and I was thoroughly glad I went along to the event.”

Mr Powell said there were about 60 children who then took part in a parade to nearby St Nicholas’ Church, in Church Street.

Tendring Brass Band then played a mixture of carols in the church to get everyone in attendance get into the festive spirit.

A Harwich RNLI spokesman said: “We are very pleased to have had a part in continuing the town’s tradition.”
