A family is continuing the legacy of a young woman who tragically died in her sleep, by raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

Maisie Tothill, a former Burnham Primary School pupil, was 22 when she died suddenly at home on January 25.

She had been suffering from epileptic seizures for around three years before her death.

Mum Nicky Patrick has since launched a campaign in memory of her daughter, which has already raised almost £5,000 for the charities Support Dogs and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy Action.

Maisie had graduated with a politics degree last summer from Leeds University, which she hoped to use to make a positive impact on people.

Ms Patrick, who was Burnham Primary headteacher when her daughter was a pupil there, said: “We would like to raise money for two charities that support people affected by conditions similar to Maisie’s.

“Politics was one of her many passions. She wanted to make a real difference and was involved in research connected to sustainable business.

“But she really wanted to be an investigative journalist, emulating Stacey Dooley, and travel the world highlighting social injustice.

Maisie was an avid Southend United supporter and passionately argued the benefits of supporting your local team.

She played football for Burnham Ramblers and the Leeds University women’s team.

Ms Patrick added: “She and I loved musical theatre and shared an obsession with the musical Hamilton.

“The overwhelming theme of the tributes that have poured in refer to her as beautiful inside and out, and the fact she was always smiling.

“Maisie was simply the best daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend anyone could wish for.

“She was truly loved by everyone that knew her.

“Her friends and family are devastated by her loss and are struggling to understand what life will be without her.”

Southend United held a minute’s applause in the 22nd minute of a game at the start of this month, as well as Leigh Ramblers Ladies, and the Leeds University Ladies.

A football tournament is also set to be held in Southend in Maisie’s name.
