AN MP has hit out at politicians trying to delay leaving the EU saying "the Brexit genie is out of the bottle".

Sir Bernard Jenkin, Harwich and North Essex MP, was one of the overwhelming majority in Westminster that voted against Prime Minister Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement on Tuesday - the deal was rejected by a majority of 149.

On Wednesday night MPs were asked to vote on whether to stop the UK from leaving the European Union without a deal, which was passed by 312 votes to 308.

MPs will tonight vote on delaying Brexit. If it is passed, and the European Union agrees to it, the UK will not leave as planned on March 29.

Sir Bernard said: “I voted against Theresa May's deal which the Attorney General still described as providing no legal means of exit.

“We have the unilateral right to leave the EU with or without an agreement.

“If we signed this agreement we would be stuck in the limbo of the agreement until the EU gives us permission to get out and that is unacceptable.

“I voted on Wednesday to honour the referendum pledge and leave on March 29 but we have a lot of MPs who are trying to block Brexit and they will vote to delay.

“MPs who think there can stop Brexit are living in cloud cuckoo land. The Brexit genie is out of the bottle.

“The idea Brexit voters are going to be told you voted leave but you can’t have it is crazy.”
