KIND-HEARTED students have given up certain items for Lent in order to help others less fortunate.

Youngsters from Harwich and Dovercourt High School, in Hall Lane, have been encouraged to give up an item of food per day during Lent to help those less fortunate than themselves in the local community.

Lent is the six-week period lasting up to Easter.

In Lent, many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up certain luxuries in order to replicate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ’s journey into the desert for 40 days.

Leading up to the Easter period items of food, including several Easter eggs, have been handed in by Harwich and Dovercourt High School students and will shortly be donated to the Harwich Food Bank.

Kate Finch, the school’s headteacher, said she was overwhelmed with the response that she had received for this worthy cause, and was proud of the Harwich and Dovercourt High School students and their empathy for those less fortunate than themselves.
