PLANS have been unveiled to restore the roof of a 18th century thatched cottage which was ravaged by fire.

Fire crews spent 12 hours battling the blaze at the cottage in Old Ipswich Road, Ardleigh, in January.

Nine crews of firefighters from across Essex travelled to the scene to remove the thatch and tackle the fire in sections.

The fire, which was found to be accidental, left the roof needing to be repaired.

Harwich and Manningtree Standard:

Plans have now been submitted to Tendring Council for a new roof and remedial works to repair the damage and for listed building consent.

A heritage statement in the application said the cottage should be able to maintain its Grade II listing after the works are complete.

The report said: “Despite the fire the building is of considerable historic interest as a relatively unaltered example of the many small cottages built on common land during the early-19th century.”
