A SCULPTURE of the Mayflower Ship is set to be installed on a Harwich roundabout within weeks.

The metal sculpture of the ship that sailed the pilgrim fathers to America in 1620 will be on the roundabout on Freshfields Road in the town, formerly known as the blue roundabout.

Mike Carran, head of sport and leisure at Tendring Council, said: " I went to have a meeting with the people who are designing it.

"It's coming on really nicely - they are set to start fixing it together over the next couple of weeks.

"It's going to be one of the biggest pieces of external artwork in the country - it's 12m high."

The £45,000 sculpture, funded by Tendring Council with the £60,000 groundworks and plinth funded by Essex County Council, is hoped to be installed on July 9.
