A TEENAGER with an ear for alternative tunes is walking on air after winning a national radio award for her music station.

Lucy Hutton, 17, from Bradfield, scooped the prestigious accolade for the Best in Music Presenter at The Young Audio and Radio Industry Awards ceremony in London last week.

The awards celebrate the best in radio talent across the country for people under 18 years old.

Lucy decided to enter the awards with her station Reckless Radio which she set up at the age of 16 as she was frustrated with the music choice on mainstream radio.

To her surprise, the Suffolk One student came home from the London event with the award for the Best in Music Presenter for her station which plays music from the likes of Wolf Alice, Paramore, Two Door Cinema club and All Time Low.

Lucy, who is an A-Level student, said the event was a fantastic experience to be a part of.

She said: "When my name was read out and I had to stand up and accept the award on the stage it was really nerve-racking.

"I just thought to myself I better not trip up in front of everyone.

"It was the first time I'd ever won anything.

"I can't remember all of the night clearly as I was just full of adrenaline from getting an award."

During the awards Lucy had the chance to meet a host of people who work for renowned radio stations like Kerrang, as well as KISS presenter Daisy Maskell and Radio 1's Matt Edmondson.

She said: "It was great to shake hands with people in radio and network with them too."

Lucy hopes her award will help her sell advertising and sponsorship on her station to pay for an expansion.

She said: "I hope the award will be a springboard for my radio career.

"I would hope to be able to have live guests on the show once I can afford to upgrade the equipment."

The awards were held on May 17 at the BBC’s New Broadcasting House.

Lucy's station now broadcasts online at recklessradio.net.
