COMMUTERS have hit the roof over hazardous birds nests, pigeon mess and rubbish "everywhere" at Dovercourt Train Station.

Two season ticket holders have hit out to Greater Anglia about paying thousands of pounds a year to use the "eyesore" station.

They say pigeon droppings are a health hazard and three birds' nests near electrical parts are causing a fire hazard.

Commuter Brian Hurley, of Hankin Avenue, Dovercourt, made the complaint to rail bosses on Monday.

The 47-year-old said: "The station is full of pigeon mess everywhere and the whole place needs a jet wash from the bird muck.

"As well as this the guttering has gone so rain water washes down and it won't be long before the station is in a derelict state.

"Every morning rubbish is littered everywhere from where children congregate a night due to free wifi at the station."

Brain, who moved to the area a year ago and commutes to London, said he thinks the station is an eyesore.

He added: "It's just a shame as it could be a lovely station.

"How is this going to signal for any visitor coming to the town for next year's Mayflower festivities?"

Next year marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship's historic voyage to America.

The ship was captained by former Harwich resident Christopher Jones and a host of celebratory events will be held in the town next year.

Chris Stone, who regularly commutes with Brain, also contacted Greater Anglia this week.

He said: "Dovercourt Train Station needs attention as it's very neglected with pigeon nests causing a fire risk."

Chris said the nests are close to electrical parts which make them a fire hazard.

A Greater Anglia spokesman said: "This issue has been reported to our facility management team, who will be clearing it up as soon as possible.

"We’d like to reassure customers that we carry out regular safety checks at stations to pick up any potential hazards."
