A FUNDRAISING team supporting adults with learning difficulties is taking part in the Great East Swim.

The team, made up of Acorn Village staff, volunteers and supporters of the Mistley-based charity, is tackling the murky swim on Saturday, June 22 in Alton Water, Suffolk.

They are of all ages and swimming abilities and together will be swimming the equivalent length of the English Channel.

Kate Williams, of Acorn Village, said: “Those who have signed up so far include people who haven’t swum for ten years and those who are terrified of open water but are taking on the challenge to raise vital funds for adults with learning disabilities as well as an extreme personal challenge.

“Acorn Village’s chief executive Michelle Cook has committed to swimming a mile despite despising the water and having a fear of birds.”

The team of 15 have been training in the River Stour in Dedham and with a less than a week to go and say they are feeling incredibly apprehensive.

Michelle said: “As someone who isn’t that keen on the water, being splashed or the cold, this is huge personal challenge.

“However, I am excited about joining the fantastic Team 21 to take part in the Great East Swim.

“I feel passionate about our motto here at Acorn Village of Life is for Living, and it is vital fundraising as this that enables us to empower adults with learning disabilities to live their life to the fullest.”

A spokesman for the team added: “We’re doing this to raise vital funds to help adults with learning disabilities at Acorn Village and hope you can help us achieve this.

“Acorn Village urgently needs to convert bathrooms to wet rooms and we’re hoping funds raised can go towards this.”

So far the group has nearly raised £500 of its £2,000 target.
