A SPORTS centre is taking further steps towards to improve inclusivity after curating a dementia-friendly programme of activities.

Leisure World Colchester’s latest accommodating initiative is designed to better support those living with dementia and their carers by offering them more relaxed sessions and fun sports.

The positive programme is funded by the Improved and Better Care Fund and follows the water centre’s previous, successful attempts to provide a safe and fun environment for exercise lovers dealing with the debilitating disease.

The forward-thinking activities on offer range from badminton and table tennis to supervised swimming in the Fitness Pool, and on select days cake and singing afternoons will also be held.

Colchester Borough Councillor Theresa Higgins said: “As a dementia-friendly organisation, we believe that a huge difference can be made to the lives of all those living with dementia if people around them understand the difficulties they face.

“I’m really pleased that so many people have enjoyed the funded dementia activities over the last year and I hope that they continue to come to Leisure World to enjoy the sessions.”

The forward-thinking sessions take place on Wednesdays during term-time and participation costs between £4-£7.80 per person while carers can take part or attend for free.

The Coffee and Cake afternoon takes place on July 17 and 24 between 1-3pm and the Songs and Memories event on June 26 until July 10 between 1-2pm.

Transport to Leisure World is also available to participants.
