Canvey Carnival - now in its tenth year - will return this weekend, with a large procession followed by a festival-style event.

Organisers say it’s been all hands to the pump to make it the best ever.

Joan Liddiard, 72, event secretary, said there are some new editions this time around.

She said: “It is going really well so far.

“The event will begin again from Thorney Bay residential park, and continue through the town to finish at the Labworth Park for the fun day.

“This year one of our biggest draws will be the coach from Cribbs Funeral Director with horses and groom used by the Lord Mayor of London for his show.

“That will be impressive and a very nice edition on the day.”

She added: “We also have about 19 other floats and various performers on the day.

“We will have the mayor of Castle Point and the town council riding in the carriage in the procession.

“Other parade participants will include the pipe band lead by the fire brigade.”

The organiser said the team wants to thank the popular island residential park for its help over the decade.

She said it will be the last time it can start there and the park bosses are more than accommodating.

Ms Liddiard added: “The fun day will start from about midday with performers beginning from about 1pm.

“Our acts on the day will include a range of singers and dance troupes.

“It will be really good.

“This year will be bigger and better than before.”

She said the event team are always in need of support including marshals for the event.

The carnival raises cash for charities and has collected more than £16,500 over the years.
