A CHARITY which provides financial and practical support to voluntary groups across north Essex is celebrating its 30th birthday.

Grassroots Charity was founded in 1989 with the aim of boosting a range of organisations based in Colchester and Tendring.

Since its formation more than 1,000 small grants have been handed out to groups of all shapes and sizes.

To mark the charity’s 30th birthday it held a garden party in Colchester.

Sue Hawes, director of Grassroots Charity, said: “Trustees and patrons of the charity were joined by supporters and grant recipients to celebrate the charity’s achievements.”

In the latest round of funding, a total of £6,921 was distributed to 13 good cause, including the Colchester Korban Project and Bentley in Bloom.

Jennifer Tollhurst, Lord Lieutenant of Essex, attended the charity’s AGM to help distribute the cash.
