A CONSORTIUM of current and former classmates have been adding to a “legendary” teacher’s retirement pot as a farewell gift.

Roger Reed has been teaching at East Bergholt High School since 1979.

After teaching English to thousands of students over 40 years, Mr Reed has announced he will be retiring at the end of this term.

As a way of thanking Mr Reed for his dedication, his current and former students, and colleagues from the past and present, have raised more than £800 towards his retirement fund.

Former student Penny Jane Ford was taught by Mr Reed between 1982 and 1987.

She set up the online fundraising page for people to donate money towards a retirement holiday for Mr Reed.

She said: “His teaching style was firm and fair, and I have never heard anyone say a bad word about him.

“He is truly an inspirational man.”

Penny has also gathered dozens of messages of thanks and support from former pupils to go in a memory book for Mr Reed.

Chris Burns, acting headteacher, said: “Having worked with Roger for 22 years, I can honestly say that he is one of the most dedicated, caring and thoughtful people I have ever worked with.

“His work with our students and their families over the years has been considerable and is shown in the genuine warmth that a huge number have shown towards him since his retirement was announced when they have reflected upon his impact upon them.

“Many of those who have attended East Bergholt over the years will have their own memories of Mr Reed as their teacher or as their head of year and fully appreciate all he did for them at the time."

He said Mr Reed will be remembered for his strong sense of humour, forthright views on a number of topics, the ability to make people laugh and his belief in the power of education.

Mr Burns added: “Roger is a compassionate and empathetic man who places high value on relationships.

“His family are vitally important to him and I know that he is looking forward to being able to spend more time as grandad.

“His legacy at East Bergholt is immense and he will be truly missed.”
