DISADVANTAGED children in Harwich and Dovercourt are getting free nutritious meals throughout the summer holidays.

A scheme to feed youngsters from four schools in the area during school holidays is taking place at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre, in Dovercourt.

Named Holiday Fun, the programme is part of an existing scheme run by Firstsite, in Colchester, providing meals for families, alongside activities which is being extended to Harwich.

The sessions started running on Tuesday and will run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until September 2.

Nutritious lunches will also be available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 12pm and 1.30pm, costing £2 for a child and £3 for an adult.

These meals are free to families with a Holiday Fun voucher.

Free drop-in art sessions will run at the centre from 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Art activities will vary each week, from weaving to creating matchbox memories, these are inspired by Firstsite’s exhibitions and the Mayflower ship.

Activities will be most suitable for four to 11-year-olds, but all ages are welcome.

Sue Hogan, Firstsite’s programme manager, for learning and education, said: “It’s very early, but it’s very exciting and we are very pleased to have the programme in Harwich.”

Free physical activities will run from 10.30am until 11.30am – places must be booked from 5pm the day before, via the Firstsite website or by calling 01206 713700.
