A LIFEBOAT crew was called to rescue a dinghy which had run aground.

Harwich RNLI volunteers were woken shortly before 1am on Sunday, August 11, for a launch of the inshore lifeboat.

A 9ft dinghy was aground just down river from Levington Maria, in Suffolk, and had requested assistance.

A Harwich RNLI spokesman said: "On arrival at the scene, the lifeboat was not able to get close to the vessel due to the state of tide.

"After discussions with the coastguard, a coastguard mud rescue team was tasked to the scene."

The lifeboat provided safety cover while the mud rescue took place.

The Coastguard Rescue Team then took an individual to safety.

The inshore lifeboat returned to station to be refuelled and made ready for service at about 3.40am.
