HOMELESS pods could be set up around Harwich to help rough sleepers escape the elements.

Harwich’s community group, PCT Hub, works to help residents with a range of social issues including those who have found themselves without a home.

Tony Francis, who launched the group, discussed the options of helping the town’s homeless at their latest meeting.

He said: “PCT Hub is investigating affordable and temporary housing options for the Harwich area.

“These include dialogue with investors, local philanthropists and homeless service users themselves.

“A principle aim is to create realistic options once there is an appreciation of the range of issues around homelessness and housing.

“Pods and container conversions are realistic options, as are ‘beds in sheds’.

“Derelict and under used properties are not a simple answer.

“There are complexities around premises.

“I promote rehabilitation and there are some great schemes, which incorporate home building in a rehabilitation process.”

A range of pods are used for homeless people in cities across the UK to provide safe and warm places for rough sleepers.

Tendring councillor Bill Davidson is helping support PCT.

He said: “There are a few rough sleepers, about four or five now in this area.

“We are trying to get them homed, but a pod offers a safe place the homeless people can sleep in.

“At the moment they are having their tents slashed by people - it’s a nightmare.

“But we are trying to find suitable places for them.”

Paul Honeywood, Tendring Council’s housing boss, welcomed the idea.

He said: “We are in the process of putting our housing strategy out to consultation.

“Part of that is looking at the need to address homelessness.

“This is something that seems like it has the makings of a good idea.

“I’m sure if there is a will we can overcome any issues.”

Mr Honeywood said there are some cases where rough sleepers have refused help from the council, so alternative solutions would be welcomed.
