A CHURCH is asking for donations to restore a historic organ, which is valued at £100,000.

The Church of Our Lady Queen of Heaven, in Fronks Road, Dovercourt, is trying to raise £10,000 to restore its 90-year-old organ.

The fundraising committee, together with its members, are looking at various ways to raise the money.

They are organizing a concert with members of Harwich Sing on September 29 at 4.30pm.

All the money raised from the concert will go towards the restoration work.

A spokesman for the church said: “The organ’s value is £100,000.

“By spending £10,000 we are only safeguarding it for future generations.

“The organ is being played every Sunday and is also played on weddings."

The organ had quite a journey and that's why it’s so important for the church.

It was built in 1929, but on the night of January 31, 1953 a storm brought devastation to the wider Harwich area.

The church was destroyed by the flooding, but the historic organ is one of the few features which was incorporated to the new church, which was rebuilt in 1955.

But the dried out and restored organ needed renewal.

It's creator, Cedric Arnold, rearranged the pipes so the swell box is at the front and the great pipes are behind, with pedal bourbons at the side.

Because of its history, its value is beyond monetary.

The organ now needs a thorough overhaul, which will involve cleaning and replacing split and worn leather components.

The tuner also reported the organ is infested with woodwork.

Members of the church have already tried raising money for the restoration project by selling unwanted jewellery and making jewellery.

The spokesman added: "I think we have a duty of care to look after this organ.

"Even the smallest donation will help."

The church is appealing to former parishioners and school pupils with happy memories to consider supporting the cause.
