CONTRACTORS have said there will be no more road closures surrounding the Ipswich Road roadworks until next year.

Drivers can breathe a sigh of relief as a new phase of works at Ipswich Road will be carried out overnight and at weekends.

The contractor for the roadworks, Eurovia, provided an update online.

It said: “The hoarding work on the Network Rail side of Ipswich Road roundabout is expected to start at the beginning of October.

“These works will be carried out at weekends and during the night.

“The traffic management will be installed and removed nightly. There are no more planned road closures until the new year.”

A number of road closures have taken place this year as the contractors work to create single roundabouts at Ipswich Road and Harwich Road.

There are a few lane closures this month while construction works take place.

The contractor added: “We have lane one closed in Cowdray Avenue.

“This is to keep traffic moving safely around site and to the Ipswich Road roundabout.

“Traffic has been placed into one lane from the Harwich Road compound westbound to Ipswich Road roundabout.

“Ipswich Road north has had lane one taken out to allow sufficient safety for a construction zone.

“Harwich Road north has seen a lane two closure put in place heading southbound to the roundabout.”

This week, BT works will be taking place and the reconstruction phase along St Andrews Avenue to Harwich Road north is ongoing.

The contractor said: “This will see existing kerb lines, footpath edgings renewed and the road widths changed in this area.

“We will be continuing with construction zone 1C. This is the area of Ipswich Road north round to St Andrew’s Avenue. It is the full length around the Waitrose wall.”

The latest closure of part of Ipswich Road was on August 19.

Four weeks of water main works started in June but the road was closed for longer than expected after technical connection problems were discovered.

Anglian Water contractors were trying to connect newly-diverted water mains but could not shut down the valves due to their age.

The road was closed from August 19 to August 31 for the works to be completed.
