CURIOUS visitors from far and wide headed to historic Harwich for a heritage weekend.

A host of the town’s iconic attractions were open free of charge for members of the public to explore last Saturday and Sunday.

Some of the most popular attractions people flocked to at the weekend included the Redoubt Fort and Harwich Maritime Museum.

They were opened by the Harwich Society as part of the National Heritage Weekend.

Garry Calver, Harwich Society’s press officer, said the open days were a big hit with residents and visitors.

He said: “It was a big success over both days and what was really noticeable was how many visitors had travelled quite substantial distances to see what Harwich had to offer.

“The Harwich Society has always supported National Heritage Open Days and opens all of the town’s attractions for free.

“There were eight attractions open to the public over the weekend.

“Harwich Town Council also opened the Guildhall.”

Harwich Society’s visitor attractions in the town are the Redoubt Fort, the Radar Tower, the High Lighthouse, the Treadwheel Crane, the Lifeboat Museum, the Harwich Maritime Museum and the Ha’Penny Pier Visitor Centre.
