CONCERNS over a major road’s condition will be taken to the Transport Secretary, a minister has promised.

The Secretary for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, met with businesses and councillors at Harwich International Port to discuss preparations made for Brexit last Thursday.

During the meeting concerns over the A120’s present and future state were raised.

Ivan Henderson, Harwich county councillor, highlighted the importance of making the trunk road fit for purpose, and voiced his concerns over the increase in heavy goods vehicles on the road following Brexit.

Mr Jenrick said: “I’ve heard some very strong representations today about the A120, which I’ll take back to the Transport Secretary.

“It’s an important road, and as we leave the EU and new opportunities open up in Harwich to take on further capacity, it’s important that road is up to scratch to take on those vehicles.”

He added: “We are putting in place quite detailed plans to ensure traffic flows could be maintained around the port in the event of a no deal outcome.

“Police have been working closely with the Highways England to model the additional traffic flows.”

He said the port has additional parking capacity for vehicles to wait in before they make their departure from the UK.

He added: “Leaving without a deal will pose challenges to many parts of the country, but we hope it’s only going to be temporary challenges.”

Neil Stock, leader of the Tendring Council, said the meeting had been a positive experience.

He said: “While the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government was in Harwich we were able to press him for further, much needed investment.

“In particular for long overdue improvements to the A120 to Harwich, which is vital not only for EU Exit preparations, but also for the long-term success of our district.”
