BIG heads can be borrowed for free as final preparations are underway for this year’s popular annual carnival.

People are extremely busy with preparations for this year’s Guy Carnival, which is taking place on Saturday, October 26.

The unique carnival, which started life as the Shipwrights’ Carnival in 1854- celebrating its 165 anniversary, is full of witty slogans poking fun at big issues in the town as well as fancy dress and music.

Wendy Taylor-Jones and her family have been making big heads for years and has got about 80 in stock, which can be borrowed for the event.

Mrs Taylor-Jones said: “We make them, because we hope it will encourage people to come along to the carnival and it makes the Guy Carnival well-attended.

“We also make smaller heads, so children can join in, if families want to take part together.

“All they need to do is come along to the Big Head and Bucket Shop, wear it at the carnival and at the end of the event leave it at the Cutaway barber shop, in West Street, Harwich.”

The HGC Big Head and Bucket shop, in Kingsway, Dovercourt is open Monday, October 21 to Friday, October 25 between 2pm to 5.30pm and on Saturday, October 26 from 11am to 2pm.
