A £90 million harbour expansion scheme is good news for the town and its harbour.

A new development is in the pipeline to increase the depth of Harwich harbour by 16 meters which will allow 400-metre long mega-ships to arrive.

It is still early days, but if the project is approved it will surely be beneficial for residents and businesses.

Fears over the erosion of the foreshore have been raised, but there is no firm evidence the scheme will make it evidently worse.

The project still needs to receive consent from the Marine Management Organisation.

Experts will be thoroughly investigating positive and negative impacts works might have, the potential effects of tidal flows, waves, sand and mud movement.

The funding of the multi-million plans will predominantly come from the tariffs the harbour charges shipowners.

More containers will result in more goods coming in, which should mean a big boost for our town’s economy.

It should be a positive step forward into a yet unknown post-Brexit world.
