A WOMAN has died after being in a fatal collision in Mistley.

Police were called to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a car in New Road, near the bowls club just before 6.40pm on Monday.

The car, a silver Volvo V70, was being driven from Lawford to Mistley when it collided with a woman aged in her 50s.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Mistley and Manningtree Bowls Club spokesman said: “We were greatly shocked to hear about this tragic accident and our sympathy goes out to her family at this time.”

Sherri Singleton, owner of the Mistley Thorn, Mistley Kitchen and Lucca, in Manningtree, said she was driving from the Mistley Thorn to Lucca, when she saw emergency vehicles “flying past”.

She said: “I didn’t know who it was, and I don’t know the circumstances, but a lot of people walk their dogs along that road, and it was dark when it happened.

“There are no streetlights along New Road and it’s pitch black.

“It is very worrying, because it’s the second time somebody has died on the same stretch of road.”

She said somebody else had died in the 1990s on the road.

A resident, who asked not to be named, said the collision has worried him.

He said: “It worries me because I walk my dog every day there and the speed the drivers are coming down is very fast, and it’s not just cars, it is the lorries as well.

“It’s a 30mph road and at night it’s as black as black can be.”

Another resident, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said: “People seem to be going quite fast down there. I think there should be a campaign for a lower speed limit.”

The road was closed for a couple of hours following the incident.

No arrests have been made over the crash and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting incident number 890 of 21/10 or email collisionappeal@essex.police.uk.
