A SECONDARY school is teaming up with a rugby club as it looks to increase its community links.

Maltings Academy says its new partnership with Witham Rugby Club will help provide students with better opportunities to play the sport.

Year 9 students have already helped to decorate a previously unsightly area of the rugby club and run a tournament for primary schools.

Headteacher James Forbes said: “This year, we are looking to grow our links with our community. Part of that work is seeing us build relationships with the club, with some great work already having taken place between us.

“Some of these students had never played rugby before, so we also hope they get the bug and want to go and play.”

Former rugby club president Nick Redfern added: “Our long-term aim is to develop not only as a rugby club, but also as a community hub. The links with Maltings Academy are one of the many steps we are taking in this direction.”
