THIS picture offers a glimpse at what the proposed new Aldi store in Braintree would look like.

The German supermarket giant is still awaiting a ruling on its planning application to build a shop off Millennium Way.

Blueprints for the scheme were first submitted back in July and an artist's impression has now been made public.

The plans have received a mixed reaction so far, with Cressing Parish Council objecting to the proposals due to fears over increased traffic.

And in a blow for Aldi, Braintree Council's health and safety team is also opposed to the scheme.

Manager Lisa Le Besque has submitted an objection over concerns about how delivery lorries will be able to access the store and how the current design of the car park would be unsafe for pedestrians.

Some residents have however offered their support for the proposed shop and have highlighted the creation of new jobs as a key reason why the application should be approved.

A resident of Cressing Road said: "I couldn't support this application more. Think it will be a great asset for Braintree and it would be wonderful to have an affordable option to shop at. Also the creation of more jobs for the town is a fab thing."

Another resident of Hay Lane added: "With the amount of homes been built in the district people need more choice and this application would help that.

"Our choice in Braintree at the moment of food stores is not the best and by inviting a store such as Aldi to the area would certainly help."

Aldi's previous bid to construct a shop at the Skyline 120 Business Park in Great Notley but the scheme was rejected by Braintree Council in 2016 despite widespread public support.

A total of 64 residents had sent letters supporting the application to the council, however officers said they did not want the shop built on land allocated for employment only.
