TRADERS are being made aware that supplies of salt will be available throughout the winter months to keep the pavements outside their businesses ice-free.

Harwich town councillors have been visiting businesses in Harwich and Dovercourt to make them aware of the Winter Salt Bag scheme.

Essex County Council runs the scheme, under which it makes supplies of salt available to town and parish councils.

And Harwich Town Council, in partnership with the Harwich Mayflower Heritage Centre which stores the salt, is using its supply to assist businesses in the surrounding area.

Maria Fowler, who chairs the council’s environment and community committee, said: “As there is a limited supply the committee felt it was best used to improve access to shops and businesses during icy conditions.”
