KIND-HEARTED runners sprang into action to raise money for the WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation.

Members of the Clacton Seafront Runners group decided to take action after being moved by the bushfire crisis currently ravaging Oz.

They organised a special pier to pier run on Sunday morning - Australia Day - with many tackling the 11km run from Walton to Clacton.

Others clocked up 22km, starting at the opposite end and joining their friends on the run back to Clacton.

Together, the runners raised more than £500.

"The Australian bushfires have caused total devastation, with animals, lives, homes and habitats destroyed," said organiser Sarah Pearce.

"But thanks to all the love, support and donations, our little running group has raised in excess of £500.

"Our small £100 target was well and truly smashed and I feel so happy and proud to be part of an amazing group of people."
