A GROUP of volunteers cleared up the streets of Great Oakley, collecting 18 bin bags full of rubbish along the way.

Several residents picked litter through the village, from Harwich Road all the way to School Road and surrounding areas last Sunday.

Catherine Cocker, 43, of Harwich Road, said they cleared the whole village.

She said: “Eleven people turned up, including a few families, which was really nice and even the children got involved, which was lovely. We found an electrical heater and a car bumper, but we got all sorts. You would be surprised what people chuck out of their cars, which is a shame as when I was brought up, I took my rubbish home with me, but nowadays people think it’s acceptable to do this.

“We also have current and former councillors who help, such as Mike Bush and they are really helpful, they come out even on a cold day.”

The group meets on the first Sunday of the month and their next meeting will be on Sunday, March 1 at the Little Oakley refuse site at 10.30am.

Everyone is welcome to join.
