TRADING Standards officers stopped a container of almost 1,000 hoverboards at Harwich International Port.

A team of officers who work with UK Border Force found the hoverboards to be in contravention of the appropriate safety legislation.

The goods have been detained and will be destroyed.

A Trading Standards spokesman said: “The costs for destroying such goods can be very high, if we are unable to trace, engage and enforce against foreign importing companies.

“However, this service takes great care to ensure the goods are destroyed environmentally.

“In the case of hoverboards this ensures the lithium batteries, metal and plastic parts are recycled in the most efficient environmentally sensitive way as possible.”
