HEARTFELT tributes have poured in for a “much-loved “ lifeboat crew member who devoted his whole life to saving others at sea.

Harwich Lifeboat Station’s second coxswain John Teatheredge died, aged 63, on Boxing Day from complications following an operation for a heart condition.

He leaves behind his wife Julie, children Robert and Abigail, his three stepchildren and grandchildren.

Mr Teatheredge’s brother Bill Teatheredge said he will be remembered for being a dedicated family man who devoted his life to saving other people.

“We are in a state of shock and disbelief,” he said.

“John was my brother, a great family man, a man who was involved in charity work, a man who dedicated his life to the service of others.

“He was quite simply the bravest man I have ever known.”

He said kind, moving tributes from the community about his brother have been a massive comfort to Mr Teatheredge’s family.

Mr Teatheredge - known by many as JT - spent 45 years with Harwich RNLI.

He joined the crew at the tender age of 17 years old and worked as the station’s second coxswain before his untimely death.

A statement from Harwich RNLI said: “Everyone is devastated at the loss of our friend and fellow crew member.

“John was an integral, much-loved and respected part of our crew and he will be greatly missed by everyone linked to our station.

“Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this difficult time and the station is rallying together to offer its support as everyone comes to terms with his loss.”

The station’s flag was flown at half mast as a sign of respect.

Walton and Frinton RNLI said it was rocked by Mr Teatheredge’s passing.

A spokesman said: “John, it was an honour to server with you, you were always welcoming, kind-hearted and pleased to see us when ever the opportunity arose.

“Your smile will be missed, along with your knowledge of the sea, but we hope for fair winds and calm seas.

“You will be missed.”

A Holbrook Coastguard Rescue Team spokesman added: “Thoughts from the whole Holbrook Coastguard team are with John’s family and friends.

“Indeed a loss to many including the RNLI and the maritime community.”
