KEEN bowls players are preparing to return as organised sport is back underway following lockdown restrictions.

Mistley and Manningtree Bowls Club members are eager to get back to business with a busy calendar already building up.

It will return to action with some taster days on May 1, 8 and 15 where people can turn up and try their hand at the skillful sport.

The club, in New Road, Mistley, is encouraging members old and new to come with flat soled shoes between 10am and 4pm and give it a go.

It is preparing to play in the Tendring, Colchester and Sudbury leagues, with friendly matches and its usual internal competitions stacking up the calendar.

To tie in with the Bowls National Open Weekend, running from May 28-31, the Club has challenged Mistley Parish Council to a friendly match.

Club Secretary Karen Thompson is hoping they get their eye in quickly.

She said: “A positive from the Covid-hit year is that the green had a break and is looking lovely for this season.

“We are grateful to Tendring Council for grants which helped us survive the past year with no income.

“It was a frustrating time, but we are looking forward to getting back bowling and seeing our friendly members again.”

Club President Margaret Arthey added: “The bowls club offers a mix of just play sessions and club events, as well as competition and leagues and we combine our play with a friendly social side – it is much more than just bowling.”
